In 1999, Jody Hendry at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada began a listserv for people involved in graduate student and teaching assistant development. Originally, Ontario developers were on the list and it grew to include more Canadians. In 2002, Trevor Holmes took over the list and revived the tradition of meetings -- well, one meeting anyway. It became clear that CTAD had an international draw and so we renamed it from Canadian TA Developers to the Consortium of TA Developers. This meant the acronym didn't need to change (but it leaves out the grad student side of things in the title anyway).
In 2007 the list migrated to Waterloo and is managed by Trevor Holmes and Svitlana Taraban-Gordon. It is now a Mailman list; we are still working at getting the archives transposed into the new system.
